Project Overview
We were appointed to carry out specialist masonry works as part of the sensitive conversion of a historic listed barn into a stunning family home. The project required the highest level of care and craftsmanship to preserve the building’s original character while enabling major structural improvements.
The Challenge
The barn’s brickwork was in poor condition, with failing mortar and areas requiring structural intervention. Major timber frame repairs and reinforcements were necessary, which meant carefully dismantling sections of the external brick panels. As a listed building, all work had to be carried out with full respect for the original fabric and using period-appropriate materials and methods.
Our Solution
Our team approached the project with meticulous attention to detail:
• Heritage Repointing: We carefully repointed the entire brickwork using a period-correct lime mortar mix, matched to the original for both performance and visual authenticity.
• Numbered Brick Removal: We painstakingly removed entire brick panels in sections, individually numbering and photographing every brick to ensure precise reinstatement.
• Structural Collaboration: While the structural engineers carried out essential timber frame repairs, we safely stored and protected the removed bricks.
• Exact Replacement: Once the timber works were complete, we reinstated every brick in its original position and orientation, maintaining the historic bonding pattern and appearance.
• Finishing Works: Final repointing and subtle cleaning to unify the restored elevations.
All works were completed in close consultation with the conservation officer to ensure full compliance with listed building requirements.
Project Outcome
The sensitive restoration allowed the barn’s historic fabric to be preserved while creating a beautiful, modern family home. The quality of the masonry works was a key feature of the finished project.
