Project Overview
We were commissioned to restore the external stonework of a charming old stone cottage that had suffered from years of weathering and inappropriate previous repairs.
The Challenge
During our initial inspection, we found the mortar in a severely deteriorated state. Large areas had crumbled away, and previous repairs using cement mortar had trapped moisture, causing further damage. Many stones showed spalling and splitting caused by years of fixings from aerials, satellite dishes, and guttering. The combination of these issues was affecting both the appearance and long-term stability of the walls.
Our Solution
We carried out a careful and sympathetic restoration:
• Thorough Removal: Carefully removed all the old failing mortar, including stubborn patches of cement from earlier repairs.
• Joint Cleaning: Deeply cleaned the joints to ensure excellent adhesion of the new mortar.
• Stone Repair: Addressed spalled and damaged stones where necessary.
• Period Correct Lime Mortar: Repointed the entire cottage using a traditional, breathable lime mortar mix matched to the age and type of stone.
• Recessed Pointing Finish: Finished with a slightly recessed pointing style to beautifully emphasise the natural texture and character of the original stone.
This approach ensured the walls could breathe properly while restoring a clean, uniform appearance.
